Fashion (A Crash Course)
Published in Hardcover by Watson-Guptill Pubns (15 March, 2000)
Authors: Andrew Tucker and Tamsin Kingswell
Average review score:

It's About More than Fashion
This is a great little book about 20th century fashion trends and their cultural and historical influences. I loved the layout and style of the book. Every two pages are on a different topic, so the book can be read and enjoyed in short segments. Also, there is a timeline at the top of each page that helps put each trend in the proper historical perspective. The only problem is that the print is quite small, so have your reading glasses handy!

A diverse and enjoyable book.
Not only can this be a very amusing and informative coffee table book, but you can sit down and read it like a novel. It goes through history (in a rather disorderly way) and writes about the different fashions of the times...different designers...and how time developed the current clothes we wear today. For the fashion victim or the fashionless...this is an adorable book.

I'm reading this book in Chinese,I love it! Our teachers never told me about it, they just teached us what is 'right'.

Great Intro to American Politics Textbook
Excellent intro to politics text. I highly recommend it for a classroom or for anyone really who wants to sit down with a plain-spoken piece to get you to understand our government. Whether it is for someone with little knowledge as to who this vast bureaucracy works, or for someone with a fairly good knowledge of it all - I don't think it will disappoint.
I think what I appreciated the most was the honesty that the text was written. The authors also included a good amount of humor to emphasize the point (in cartoon, comic, Top 10 List, etc), in order to keep a reader interested.
I think this text is also a good reference as well, as there are numerous court cases and explicit examples of gov't at work - that if you are ever at a loss for "what was it that happened?" or "what does that term mean?" Things are extremely easy to find and be referred to.
Good works.

The History of the Irish Brigade: A Collection of Historical Essay

This book had many interesting stories, but repeatedly covered material previously mentioned.

A Wonderful Account of the Sons of Erin in the Civil War
This collection of essays is a masterful representation of the Irish Brigade in the American Civil War. The volume was intended to strip away all of the glorified mistruths that have been fostered by historians and present the Irish Brigade to us only in pure fact. It reads easily, is immeasurably interesting and has a special place in my Irish book collection. Also contains many black and white photographs, maps and illustrations that complement each essay very well. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this one :)

MARKSTRAT3: The Strategic Marketing Simulation with Student Software
Published in Paperback by South-Western College/West (06 May, 1997)
Authors: Jean-Claude Larreche, Hubert Gatignon, Porter, and Jonathan B. Tucker
Average review score:

Good simulation done in a classroom setting
I had the prior version as a textbook in the MBA course in Strategic Marketing. Very instructive and a good learning tool that shows the interaction between the strategic variables in your marketing plan.

Nerve Test for Strategists
Wow!What an excellent simulation!! Nerve recking! Can't sleep withourt seeing the results every day. Better than the class room teachings and bag full of articles and books. Tests your marketing knowledge to the ultimate limits. Best part of this simulation is that no one losses and no one wins but every one LEARNS AND A LOT . This simulation is an eye-opener to the so called market strategists. The team spirit is revitalised and real leaders emerge. I recommend to all serious marketing strategists.

Matthew the Cowboy
Published in School & Library Binding by Albert Whitman & Co (August, 1990)
Authors: Ruth Hooker, Cat Bowman Smith, and Kathy Tucker
Average review score:

YeeeHaw
While I have one reservation about this book, it is good fun. THe illustrations are charming and full of detail, and Matthew really saves the day from the cattle rustlers. He is a smart young hero, and the story helps you learn the names of cowboy gear such as chaps, bridle, spurs, etc. I also enjoyed the little desert creatures that seemed to follow Matthew around.

The only reservation I had was in the originality of the plot itself. The story of cows being rebranded has been done before. The best example of a rustler overlaying a portion of a brand over an existing brand to change it completely, is in the Donald Duck story from October 1948 "Sheriff of Bullet Valley". That is one of the most famous stories ever written and illustrated by the great Carl Barks, and it has been reprinted a few times over the years.
It is still a fun book, and well worth the very affordable price here at Amazon.com. []

If you have a toddler who's a cowboy, get this book!
There seem to be very few books for toddlers on cowboys. This is the best, and will continue to be even if others are written. Matthew gets a cowboy outfit for his birthday, and then "becomes" (in his imagination) a real cowboy, solving a mystery and capturing the bad guys in a non-violent way (the only "weapon" is a lasso, and the only visible pistol remains in the sherrif's holster). The book is PC: the storekeeper is oriental, and cowhands Slim, Tex, and Pete seem (from the wonderful illustrations) to be a senior citizen, woman, and Afro-American, respectively. My two-and-a-half-year-old son, who believes himself to be a real cowboy, has me read this to him at least twice each night, asking questions about the pictures, and generally being thrilled with it. If you have a toddler who's a cowboy, this is definitely the book for you. (Amazon.com's suggested age range of 4-8 may be about right, but, as I noted, my son is quite a bit younger and ! loves it.)

Monet in the 20th Century
Published in Paperback by Yale Univ Pr (September, 2000)
Authors: Claude Monet, Maryanne Stevens, George Shackelford, Royal Academy of Arts (Great Britain), Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Michael Leja, Mary Anne Stevens, and Paul Hayes Tucker
Average review score:

A wonderfull look at Monet
I found this book not only to be filled with the wonderfull works of Claude Monete but it also has a great insight to his life and the imprssion he left on modern art today. This book also contains full fold-out pictures of some of the artists best works. For anyone who has ever enjoyed any of Monets work you will love this book.

A must, for anyone looking to expand an art library!
This book is a perfect addition to any art library. Having seen "Monet in the 20th Century" in Boston at the Museum of Fine Arts, I was well prepared for the exhibit by having read the book first. I found the exhibit to be an extraordinary example of Monet's achievment in his later years. This book focuses on the works of Monet starting at the start of this century right up to his death in 1928. All through this period of Monet's life and including the representation of the body of work produced within those years, this book never skips a beat. Although not an all-encompassing look at his complete works of that period, this book offers the best look out there of his paintings as well as his development throughout the last quarter-century of his life. I found it to be in keeping with what is already known about Monet's later years, but certainly not devoid of interesting insights. The quality of the book, it's contents, including all of the color plates reproduced within is very good. I would not have an art library without Monet representation, and this is the ideal book for an addition or a starter.

The Philosophy and Politics of Czech Dissidence from Patocka to Havel (Pitt Series in Russian and East European Studies)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Pittsburgh Pr (Txt) (September, 2000)
Authors: Aviezer Tucker and Avezier Tucker
Average review score:

Students of Czech history: read this book now!
This highly readable book is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in the roots of the dissident movement in communist Czechoslovakia. Tucker describes the philosophical heritage of key members of Charter 77 with amazing clarity. He also does a great job of explaining the political and historical context of their thoughts.

Please note that the book is not an encyclopedic account of Czech dissident thought. "From Patocka to Havel" in the title might better be phrased "OF Patocka AND Havel," since the work of other Czech dissidents are mentioned mostly in reference to these two men's theories. However, as theoretical background to a complex issue, this book is well worth reading.

Foundations of Political Theory First Book Honorable Mention
This book has been awarded one of two Honorable Mentions for the 2001 Best First Book Prize from the Foundations of Political Theory division of the American Political Science Association. The citation reads as follows:

In The Philosophy and Politics of Czech Dissidence from Patocka to Havel, Aviezer Tucker provides a captivating critical narrative of the Charter 77 movement in Czechoslovakia and of the ideas that inspired it. The result is an informative and provocative case study of the intersection of theory and praxis during a pivotal time in Eastern European politics. Patocka was the pre-eminent Czech philosopher during the thirteen year career of the Charter 77 movement, and his philosophy played a central role in its history. His life and fate, as Tucker observes, parallels that of Socrates in Athens; and Havel's role as a philosopher president presented him with the kind of problems Plato confronted in his reforming mission to Syracuse. Tucker illuminates this important chapter in recent history and provides thoughtful critical commentary on the post-Heideggerian and phenomenological ideas that his subjects brought to life.

Pocket Companion to Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease
Published in Paperback by W B Saunders (15 August, 1999)
Authors: Stanley L. Robbins, Vinay Kumar, Tucker Collins, and Ramzi S. Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease Cotran
Average review score:

A Clear, Concise Review of Pathology and Pathophysiology
This book does an excellent job of presenting the material in the complete Robbin's textbook in a very clear manner. It is written in a concise, outline form that allows for easy review of only the most important aspects of disease. While Pathologic Basis of Disease is the standard for the study of medical patholgy, this book is saves so much time that you can get in even more review. That is of infinite value!

A must read for Step 1
This is one my pearl for all second year students preparing for the boards: This book is the gold standard for being properly prepared for the Boards. I memorized this book, Ganong's Physiology, Katzung's pharm review, Jawetz's Micro review. I also memorized Lippincot's Biochem, NMS Neuroscience, NMS Genetics. I broke 255 and am now a first year resident at my first choice for neurosurgery (and I only wanted the most prestigous programs).

If you have high aspirations, then you must memorize Robbins' pocket companion also. It is so much more thorough than the BRS and retains some element of succinctness. There are no path questions on the boards that you won't be able to get if you memorize this book from cover to cover.

That is the key. Memorize this book and the others mentioned above and you too can pick where you want to do your residency.

The Seven Chinese Sisters
Published in Library Binding by Albert Whitman & Co (March, 2003)
Authors: Kathy Tucker and Grace Lin
Average review score:

Can-do sisters & great illustrations
In this all-girl version of the Chinese tall tale "The Seven Chinese Brothers," the sisters pool their amazing talents in order to save the seventh sister from a hungry dragon. First sister can "ride a scooter, fast as the wind," second sister knows karate, third sister can count to a high number...and so on. The story moves along quickly and works nicely for reading aloud.

As always, Grace Lin's illustrations are a visual treat--from the sisters' azure dresses to the bright red dragon to the textured background of green grasses and light blue sky. Her style is simple, yet rich with Chinese patterning and design.

There is a lot to like in this book with its model of strong can-do girls who use their heads, even in the face of a terrible dragon.

However, any update will invariably be compared to the original story, and here I find the "sisters" story seems a little more diluted and lacking in dramatic tension than its "brother" counterpart. In The Seven Chinese Brothers (by Margaret Mahy) the brothers use their superhuman powers to continuously outwit their would-be executioners. The pleasure in this book comes from being able to predict how each brother will outwit the adversary.

Though the sisters' talents complement each other nicely, the story is not as tightly crafted & the sense of anticipation is not as strong.

That said, both books are well reading to your children, as evidenced by my four-year-old daughter who asked me to read it over and over the first two days we had the book.

Note: If you liked the illustrations in this book, Grace Lin has illustrated several other excellent books for the 4-8 year-old set. Among them are Red is a Dragon, Round is a Mooncake, Dim Sum for Everyone and Kite Flying.

Seven sisters must unite and each use her own special talent
The Seven Chinese Sisters is a merry rendition by Kathy Tucker of a classic Chinese folk tale. Seven sisters must unite and each use her own special talent when the youngest of them is taken away by a hungry dragon. Simple and colorful artwork by Grace Lin embellishes this adventurous story. The Seven Chinese Sisters will prove to be a popular and entertaining addition to any family, school, or community library children's folktale picture book collection.
